Putting the Pieces Together - The Better Together Project Details and More
Over the last couple of months we have met with so many leaders from churches all across North America. Each and everyone of them (pastors, council chairs, key volunteers, etc.) are passionate about the Gospel and about how their church is called to live into the particular mission God is calling them toward. These meetings have been refreshing opportunities to see how the Holy Spirit is at work across so many congregations in so many communities.
One of the realities though that has echoed throughout those conversations has been the daunting challenges our congregations face as we seek to navigate through differences. The polarizing forces within our culture, even found within our sanctuaries, are undeniable. Polarization - pointing out the apparent faults of the other - is becoming a favorite pastime in too many places. And it is this kind of polarization - particularly over issues that don’t threaten our salvation in Jesus - that continues to impact our churches. If unchecked this polarization threatens to tear the Body of Christ limb from limb. This is the danger we find ourselves in and it is real. It’s a danger that absolutely threatens the passion for the Gospel and the desire to live into mission that we’ve heard testimony to throughout our engagements with so many of you.
But what do we do? How can your church and mine step forward beyond the polarization and actually engage across our differences in a constructive Christ-like, mutually respectful way so as to partner in this Gospel centered mission?
Well, we don’t claim to have the market cornered on this by any means, but we are hopeful for the emerging work of The Better Together Project. And today we’d like to share more with you about some of the key details of the Project itself and we’d love for you to consider if participating in the Project would be a helpful next step for your congregation.
